Shaping the Future of Healthcare: Insights from Western Sydney’s Health Forum

The Western Sydney Future Health Forum 2023 was recently held, attracting more than 300 clinicians, academics, and industry stakeholders, including Graeme Loy, Chief Executive of Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD), and Ryan Park, Minister for Health and Regional Health. The event focused on the challenges associated with maintaining a sustainable healthcare system in the rapidly expanding region of western Sydney.

Ryan Park emphasized the importance of investment in healthcare for greater western Sydney, one of the state’s fastest growing regions. The government’s commitment to developing essential services that grow with the communities was stressed.

The forum served as a platform to discuss key health issues, including the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical care, the importance of fostering relationships with non-government organizations (NGOs), and the need to always bring our services back to the human experience. WSLHD’s CE Graeme Loy highlighted the need for developing care models closer to people’s homes, such as their InTouch program and Virtual Care, to prevent unnecessary emergency department visits and ensure a superior human experience.

Discussions also revolved around the role of planning, design, transport, and amenities in improving health outcomes, the role of sports in boosting community health, and the need for infrastructure and services to safeguard communities from extreme heat. The forum also explored untapped opportunities within the care economy to improve efficiencies, address cost-of-living pressures, and attract investment to support research innovation in health and retain talent in western Sydney.

Richard Alcock AO, former Chair of the Western Sydney Local Health District, was awarded the Patrons’ Prize for Corporate Civic Leadership at the event, recognizing his invaluable contribution to healthcare leadership in the region.

As someone deeply invested in the health sector, I can’t stress enough the importance of such dialogues and initiatives. By bringing together various stakeholders, we can address the challenges and explore the opportunities in our healthcare system, keeping in mind the unique needs of each community. It’s also encouraging to see the potential of AI being recognized. AI can revolutionize healthcare, making it more efficient and personalized.

However, let’s not forget the human element in healthcare. As we embrace AI and other technological advancements, we must ensure that our services remain patient-centered. After all, healthcare is not just about treating illnesses, but also about providing comfort, understanding, and empathy. To all my readers, remember, your health is your wealth, so take good care of it!
